Dhubri, Nov. 26: Abdul Hai, who killed Joydeep Chakraborty, an employee of a business house, on December 19 last year, was arrested last night.

Speaking to reporters this evening, Dhubri superintendent of police Mridulananda Sarma said Abdul Hai, 30, of Gauripur area in Dhubri district, and another accused, Shajahan, were involved in killing Chakraborty, 39. But Shajahan is still at large.

Hai had created a reign of terror in Tamarhat, Gauripur and Golokganj areas by serving extortion notes to businessmen in the name of the Muslim United Liberation Tiger of Assam. He was involved in a number of crimes.

Chakraborty used to travel to Agomoni, Halakura, Tamarhat, Golokganj and Gauripur areas of Dhubri district to collect payment from business houses. He was killed near AC Barua brick kiln, while he was returning to Dhubri with Rs 4 lakh.

Sarma also said that police have arrested four robbers, involved in stealing a truck recently, and have rescued its driver Ajay Yadav of Malda, West Bengal. The truck has also been recovered.

The SP said at least four bodies have been recovered in Dhubri district in the last six months. These are suspected to be those of truck drivers and handymen but this can be ascertained only if the racket’s kingpin, who is from Goalpara, is arrested.

The police are investigating into five cases of truck robbery and are very close to making a breakthrough, as the four persons arrested from Alomganj area of Kokrajhar district last night have revealed some vital clues, Sarma added.

The robbers operate from West Bengal to Nagaland. They sell trucks stolen from lower Assam districts in Dimapur, Sarma said.
