Agartala, May 15: The Tripura government has taken strong exception to the delay in the release of funds meant for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, as almost two months of the current fiscal year have passed.

Rural development minister Jiten Chowdhury said it was a “calculated attempt” by the Centre to withhold funds in the run-up to the Assembly elections.

“In the last financial year, we had received Rs 400 crore on Apirl 1, the very first day of the financial year. In the current financial year, more than 45 days have passed but we have received nothing,” said Chowdhury.

He said demand for work under the act was “very high” in all 511 gaon panchayats and 527 village committees but no work could be given because of lack of funds.

“This is creating serious resentment among the underprivileged people,” he said.
