Guwahati, Oct. 7: Guwahati will host the first of the two international friendly football matches that India will play against Malaysia on November 13.

“This is the first time the Northeast will be hosting an international football match. The match will be played under floodlights at the Indira Gandhi athletic stadium at Sarusajai,” Ankur Dutta, secretary of the Assam Football Association, said here today.

“The other match will be played in Calcutta on November 16. Both the matches will be held on FIFA match days. Hence, the onus is on the teams to improve their ranking. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to organise the ties to prepare for the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) championship in New Delhi in December,” Dutta said.

However, the condition of the ground at Sarusajai stadium is a cause for worry.

“The turf after what we observed this morning needs adequate rolling. An AIFF team will be inspecting the ground in the second or third week this month,” the AFA secretary said, adding that a delegation from the association met the chief minister yesterday and that the latter had instructed the authorities to take the necessary steps.

BCCI nomination: The BCCI has nominated Assam Cricket Association (ACA) treasurer Ghanshyam Baruah as the observer for the first ODI between India and England at Hyderabad on October 14

Club soccer: The Assam Club Championship will be held at Nagaon in February while the Assam State Premier League will be held in January or February.
