Food-process push for Tripura
Agartala: Union minister of state for food processing industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti on Tuesday inaugurated a seminar on "Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana" here and said different parts of the country have advanced in food processing, but the Northeast is still far behind.
Referring to "queen" variety of pineapples which grow in Tripura, she said the state has huge potential in the food processing sector.
In her address at inaugural session of the seminar at a private hotel here, she said the sector got a major impetus in 2014 when the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) came to power.
"Work was done at a very fast pace since 2014 in the food processing sector. I do not want to politicise the issue. India is an agrarian country and if food-processing was considered important from the very beginning , farmers would have reaped benefits of their hard work. Many a time, they are forced to leave their crops in the field," the minister said.
"There is huge potential in food processing sector. Much can be done here," the minister added.
