Guwahati, Feb. 15: The zonal sports promotion committee of FCI Northeast is organising an All-India FCI inter-zonal badminton and table tennis tournament at SAI Indoor Stadium here from February 18 to 20.

Six teams — Headquarters Zone, North Zone, West Zone, South Zone, East Zone and hosts Northeast zone — will lock horns. Each team will have 13 players.

“The tournament will feature several national-level shuttlers and paddlers. Ranked players from Assam, including Nikhilesh Sarma, Angshuman Bora, Kaberi Phukan and Harshita Chaliha, will represent Northeast zone in badminton. In table tennis, Chinmoy Jyoti Sarma and Kritika Upadhyay will be among six paddlers from our zone,” Pinuel Basumatary, executive director, FCI (Northeast) told reporters here today.“The tournament is a part of the committee’s sports activities. Moreover, I take this opportunity to inform you that we have inducted 24 stipend players in various disciplines for the current season to promote sports in the Northeast,” Basumatary said.

“We have also recruited sportspersons on a regular basis over the past few years. In 2005, four football players were recruited, in 2009 two shuttlers and two paddlers were absorbed while in 2011, one cricketer was recruited. This year, we are going to recruit seven sportspersons — three footballers, two cricketers, one shuttler and one paddler,” he said.

The zonal sports promotion committee of FCI (N-E) had organised the inter- zonal badminton meet here in 2010.

Last year, the tournament was held in Bangalore.
