Guwahati, Aug. 22: Eyewear retail major Himalaya Optical today forayed into the Northeast with an aim to offer high-end products and quality services to its clients under one roof.

The Calcutta-based firm, which has introduced global trends in eyewear over six decades now, opened a premium showroom here, the first in the region and 75th in the country.

“The 1,100 square feet outlet will be a one-stop shop for a wide range of sunglasses, spectacles, frames and lenses apart from services such as digital eye examinations,” Sudershan Binani, director of Himalaya Optical, said.

Himalaya has over the past five years retailed a number of top-notch international brands as well.

“The Northeast has a fashion-conscious clientele and we look forward to meet the needs of this segment as well. Besides, Himalaya offers products for all income groups with prices ranging from Rs 350 to Rs 70,000,” Binani said.

The size of the Indian eyewear market is pegged at over Rs 25,000 crore.

The eyewear major plans to have four more outlets in the Northeast in two years.

“By 2016, we should be adding four more outlets in the region. We have already shortlisted about four to five cities in Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim,” he said.

The company has groomed a team from the Northeast, which will be absorbed as optometrists at the outlet.

On the relatively late foray in the region, Binani said, “We took some time establishing a market in north India. But we back ourselves on our heritage to do well out here.”
