Dispur begins tractor aid
Guwahati: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday began distributing tractors under the Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana, which has been dubbed as the largest tractor-distribution scheme in the country.
Around 26,000 tractors will be distributed under the scheme in a phased manner and 10,109 tractors were given away in the first phase on Sunday.
Sonowal ceremonially gave away keys of tractors to 25 farmers' groups at a function held at Sarusajai sports complex here in presence of agriculture minister Atul Bora, industries minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, among others.
The state government has a set a target of distributing a tractor each to all revenue villages to boost agricultural production and double farmers' income by 2022.
"Agriculture is our identity. We have to work hard to strengthen this sector. The scheme aims to help farmers by providing one tractor to each revenue village at a subsidised rate," Sonowal said.
He urged the farmers to own responsibility of the scheme and prepare an activity calendar so that maximum benefit could be accrued from it.
"The beneficiaries must put the tractors to proper use to ensure that public money is not wasted. People also have to keep a watch on how the tractors are being used. A separate unit will be constituted under the agriculture department to guide the beneficiaries and monitor their activities," the chief minister added.
"As a farmer's son, I understand the challenges faced by them. We are committed to provide a secured life and robust economic foundation to farmers," Sonowal said.
