Agartala, Dec. 28: The 12-hour Dhalai district bandh, called by the BJP today to protest the murder of Chanmohan Tripura, party leader and elected village committee member of Dalpati ADC village in Gandacherra subdivision, passed off peacefully.

While the bandh was total in Gandacherra subdivision, it evoked partial response in Ambassa and Kamalpur subdivisions of the district.

While National Highway 44 functioned normally, schools, offices and business establishments remained partially closed in Kamalpur and Ambassa subdivisional headquarters.

"There was no untoward incident during the bandh. Police arrested 250 picketers but released all of them late in the afternoon," superintendent of police (operations), Uttam Bhowmik, said.

State BJP vice-president Subal Bhowmik, who visited Gandacherra yesterday along with the party's Mahila Morcha leader Kalyani Roy, alleged that Chandmohan, 45, was "murdered in cold blood" by thugs allegedly operating under the banner of the CPM while returning home from a visit to the house of one Biswada Tripura. He alleged that shortly after the murder on Monday, the police arrested Biswada on murder charge and declared him to be "mentally imbalanced" which he described as "totally false".

"We have handed over a complaint to the officer-in-charge of Gandacherra police station, Pranab Debnath, naming the culprits involved in the murder and demanding their immediate arrest," Subal said

The complaint names CPM cadres Shibchandra Tripura , Krishna Singh Tripura, Amulya Tripura, Laxmi Chandra Tripura, Daharam Tripura, Nilmohan Tripura and Rajendra Tripura.

"The CPM MLA of Gandacherra, Lalit Tripura, had been threatening Chanmohan with dire consequences unless he left the BJP. So it is clear who did what," Subal alleged.

He said the matter had been brought to the notice of Union home minister Rajnath Singh and the BJP would continue to protest the "gruesone murder".

He said they had received Chanmohan's body from Gandacherra hospital yesterday, and arranged his cremation in his village.
