DD Pugh laid to rest

Shillong, Nov. 19: The mortal remains of former Meghalalaya chief minister D.D. Pugh were laid to rest today at Mawkhar Presbyterian Cemetery (Mission Compound) here amid chanting of hymns.

After the customary wreath-laying ceremony, special prayers were offered to the departed soul.

Meghalaya Speaker Bindo Lanong, cabinet minister Manas Chaudhuri and UDP leader Mihsahlan Suchiang were the only political leaders to attend the funeral.

Condolence messages from Governor R.S. Mooshahary and the chief minister were read out during the funeral service.All state government offices remained closed for half a day as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

The Tricolour flew at half mast. Rev. K. Pyrtuh of Mawkhar Presbyterian Church, continuing the prayers that had begun at Pugh’s Kenches Trace residence, urged the leaders to follow in Pugh’s footsteps.

Pugh, the first Khasi chief minister of Meghalaya, was the general secretary of All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC).
