Complaint against Gogoi
Guwahati: BJP legislator Pijush Hazarika on Tuesday lodged a police complaint against former chief minister Tarun Gogoi for claiming that he had shielded Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from corruption and criminal cases when Sarma was a minister in his cabinet.
Sarma, who was once a close confidant of Gogoi, quit the Congress and joined the BJP in August 2015 ahead of the last Assembly polls in Assam when relations between the two turned sour.
"If what Gogoi is claiming is true then he is also guilty of abetment of crime, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence and becomes a co-accused," said Hazarika, who filed the complaint at Dispur police station.
"Being a chief minister, he had taken an oath to protect the Constitution without any fear and favour but from his recent statements it is clear that he had misused his constitutional power and indulged in a conspiracy to save an alleged offender involved in arms case and financial scams," he added.
In his complaint, the BJP MLA has sought an inquiry into the claims made by Gogoi.
Hazarika, who is known as a trusted lieutenant of Sarma, was also earlier with the Congress but joined the BJP when Sarma switched sides in 2015.
Many a time Gogoi alleged that Sarma had joined the Congress to save himself from a Tada case and later joined the BJP to get a clean chit in Saradha and Louis Berger bribery cases.
The former chief minister had also claimed that he had overlooked Sarma's role in the North Cachar Hills scam.
Last Friday, Gogoi on his official Twitter handle, said during his tenure as chief minister, he had turned a blind eye to the alleged scams committed by Sarma.
Gogoi's latest claim shows that he is unfazed by the defamation suit filed by Sarma earlier for levelling allegations of corruption against him.
The All Assam Goriya-Moriya Yuva-Chatra Parishad and Krishak Sramik Unnayan Parishad had also lodged separate complaints at Dispur police station on Monday night for reportedly shielding Sarma.
A police source said on late Tuesday evening that they are examining the complaints and are yet to register a case.
