Guwahati, March 6: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his timely intervention yesterday that saved the life of a newborn from Moran in Dibrugarh district of Assam.
The eight-day-old girl, who was suffering from pulmonary infection, was flown to New Delhi from Dibrugarh airport for advanced treatment.
Following an email from a Delhi-based journalist seeking Modi's help to ensure that the traffic in the national capital did not halt the ambulance carrying the infant, Modi alerted his office which, in turn, asked Delhi police to take immediate action.
At Delhi airport, the air ambulance carrying the baby was offered priority landing. The infant was then rushed to Gangaram Hospital in an ambulance through a green corridor created for the purpose. The baby reached the hospital in 13 minutes. Doctors said the battery to the respiratory machine had just seven minutes left in it. The infant is now out of danger, they said.
Sonowal today called Modi and thanked him for ensuring timely arrangement in transiting the infant from Indira Gandhi International Airport to the hospital. "This timely intervention on the part of the Prime Minister gave a new lease of life to the baby," an official statement quoting Sonowal said.
"The humanity and sensibility shown by the Prime Minister will set an example for others to follow," it said.
