Guwahati, May 11: Clean Sports India, the campaign to clean up sports administration, today launched its Assam chapter, setting a December 31 deadline to state politicians to relinquish their posts as heads of sports organisations.

Launching the state unit with the formation of an ad hoc committee headed by Arjuna awardee athlete Bhogeswar Barua as president and former Assam Olympic Association secretary Mukut Medhi as convener, Clean Sports India’s national convener B.V.P. Rao said sports administration in Assam has failed miserably, particularly after the 33rd National Games, and it was time to look for reforms.

“We have demanded certain reforms like immediate resignation of politicians like Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rakibul Hussain, Bhubaneswar Kalita and Durgadas Boro who are holding presidents’ posts in multiple sports associations of Assam except one in which they are proficient. We also demand the constitution of an experts’ committee to suggest long term reforms, conduct of all future sports associations elections in accordance with the sports code of India and others,” Rao said.

“If the Assam Olympic Association headed by chief minister Tarun Gogoi fails to do so before December 31, we will take hundreds of passionate sportspersons and administrators from Assam to stage a demonstration in front of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s office in New Delhi because he himself has advocated implementation of sports code and removal of non-sportspersons from the helm of affairs in sports organisations,” Rao said.
