Jorhat, April 4: The Chutia Yuba Sanmilan, Assam, said the more than 25 lakh people of the community would not vote for the Congress in the elections.
In a news conference held here this evening, the president of the organisation, Mohan Chandra Saikia, said the Congress had betrayed them time and again.
The community, which falls under the Minorities and Other Backward Classes, has been seeking ST status under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for about two decades now.
The youth organisation wanted that a government holiday be declared on the seventh of the Baisakh month of the Saka calendar (roughly April 21) in honour of the last queen of the Chutias, Sati Sadhani.
The organisation demanded that the government keep its promise in sponsoring the Birangana Sadhani Award instituted in 2012 by the Chutia Development Council with the help of the All Chutia Jati Sanmilan.
“In the first award function at Pitambar Deva Goswami library auditorium here, chief minister Tarun Gogoi had announced that the government would patronise the award from 2013. But this was not done either,” Saikia said.
The award carries a cash amount of Rs 1 lakh, a memorial, a certificate and a shawl.
The organisation also wanted the Bogibeel-road-cum-bridge coming up at Dibrugarh to be named after the queen.
The organisation said the chief minister had also promised to preserve the artefacts unearthed at Sadiya in Tinsukia district and thereby preserve the heritage of the community but nothing has been done in this regard.
The community had also demanded that a film be made on Sati Sadhani and the great sacrifice she had made while fighting against the Ahoms in Assam.
“The Congress government which has been in power in the state has played with the emotions of the community by making false promises for almost 15 years now,” he said.
All the voters have been asked to boycott the Congress candidates and vote in favour of the right person of any other party.
“We feel that the Congress and the BJP are the same so we have not asked that the BJP be made the alternative. They should vote for anyone but the Congress,” he said.
