Guwahati: Cellphone jammers and CCTV cameras will be installed at Guwahati Central Jail to check illegal activities.

Following the arrest of a jail warder on Saturday for allegedly smuggling drugs into the central jail, Assam director-general of police Mukesh Sahay on Sunday said they have recommended the installation of cellphone jammers and CCTV cameras to prevent such incidents. The prisons department will implement it, he added.

Around 0.45gm of heroin was recovered from warder Jitumoni Deka, who was accused of supplying drugs to inmates.

There had been allegations that certain jails in the state have seen a rise in the illegal use of cellphones by inmates recently. Once the jammers will be installed, the cellular network inside the jail complex will be blocked.

"As the jammers are not commercially available, these would have to be procured from the few public sector undertakings, which are authorised to produce it. The approval of the Centre will be required to procure jammers," said Harmeet Singh, the additional director-general of police (security/modernisation and logistics).
