Guwahati: Lok Sabha MP from Meerut Rajendra Agrawal has been appointed as new chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the bill to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955.

An official source on Friday said Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has appointed Agrawal as chairperson of the joint committee on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in place of Baghpat MP Satya Pal Singh, who resigned from the committee on his appointment as a Union minister in September.

"Agrawal's appointment has been made with effect from December 25," the source said.

Following Singh's resignation the parliamentary committee was in a limbo.

The contentious bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on July 19, 2016 and was referred to the committee, which held meetings with stakeholders and visited Gujarat and Rajasthan but is yet to visit Assam.

There have been widespread protests in Assam against the bill.

The AGP, a coalition partner of the BJP in Assam, has even threatened to pull out of the government if the Centre goes ahead with the bill.
