Guwahati, May 12: The Assam Football Association has engaged the services of the Calcutta-based event management company, Celebrity Management Group, to relaunch the Assam State Premier League in a more professional manner.

The league is scheduled to kick off on May 29 and will feature 12 city-based clubs of Assam. The teams have been divided into two zones - Upper Assam and lower Assam. "The objective is to promote professional club football. The institutional teams are invariably reigning in Assam football today, which is not enough to develop football in the state. A strong football league will provide a platform to talented footballers," said Assam Football Association secretary Ankur Dutta.

Barekuri FC of Tinsukia, Trinayanjyoti FC of Dibrugarh, Moran Town Club of Sivasagar, Jorhat Town Club, Morning Star FC of Diphu and Rhino FC of Golaghat will feature in the Upper Assam zone.

Teams in the lower Assam zone are Udalguri FC, Tezpur United, Green Valley SC of Guwahati, Guwahati FC, Barhungkha AC of Kokrajhar and Global FC of Gossaigaon.

"This will perhaps be the only league in any state which will be played on home and away format. We have decided to play with the existing teams. It will be a standardised league and our intention would be to see a team qualify for the I-League in the next two to three years," said Celebrity Management Group executive director Bhaswar Goswami.
