Guwahati, April 8: Artistes here today appealed to people, organisations and Bihu committees of the state to offer financial support to singer Manoj Kashyap who turned blind allegedly because of wrong treatment.
Kashyap’s optical nerve turned dry because of which he lost his eyesight when a private hospital in Mumbai gave him wrong treatment in 2011 while he was admitted there after being affected by tuberculosis. The artiste is now planning to go to Andhra Pradesh for treatment after Bohag Bihu.
“There is not a single hospital in Guwahati which I have not visited. I had also gone to Nepal. But it was all in vain. I do not know if I will ever get back my eyesight but I would be happy if I receive love from people,” said Kashyap.
Film director Pullak Gogoi appealed to all youth and students’ organisations to help Kashyap. “Youth and students’ organisations honour artistes by felicitating them. I would appeal to them to also support artistes when they are in distress,” said Gogoi.
Singer Sudakshina Sarma said a little help from people could help one a lot. “If the Bihu committees offer a little financial support then artistes like Manoj Kashyap would get their life back,” said Sarma.
Kashyap, a resident of Japorigog in Guwahati, had gone to Mumbai in the mid-90s and earned popularity by singing Hindi and remix songs. A remix album Kata Laga, where he lent his voice, was an instant hit. He has written the lyrics for Assamese films Xopon and Bukur Majot Jwole besides singing for the latter.
The incident forced the artiste to return home. This Bihu he will perform in several functions to earn a few bucks for his treatment.
“With the help of some of my relatives and friends I will sing in Bihu functions again this time. I want to live with love from the people,” the artiste said.
Music director Ramen Barua appealed to the rich artistes of the state to help Kashyap.
On the other hand, singer Vijoylaxmi today offered financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to Kashyap. “If my support can help Kashyap a little, I will be happy,” she said.
People can donate to the accounts of Shripal Saini and Mona Saini (account number 10821649833, SBI, Silpukhuri branch) to help Kashyap get back his eyesight.
