Akademi award for Bodo writer

Bodo writer Brajendra Kumar Brahma has been selected for the Sahitya Akademi award this year for his celebrated poetry anthology Baidi Dengkhw Baidi Gab (varied musical notes, varied colour).

Kokrajhar, Dec. 17: Bodo writer Brajendra Kumar Brahma has been selected for the Sahitya Akademi award this year for his celebrated poetry anthology Baidi Dengkhw Baidi Gab (varied musical notes, varied colour).

Recipient of various awards like the Tagore Literature Award in 2009, Someswari Brahma Literary Award in 1994 and Muktaram Brahma Literary Award in 1995, Brahma has many books to his credit, especially on poetry. These include Okhrang Gongse Nangou, Ang Fwifingwn, Sanmwkhangari Bibar Jananwi and Bibar Gaodang.

As the news of his winning the Sahitya Akademi award spread, many well-wishers, family and friends thronged Brahma's residence at Baganshali here today to congratulate him. Born on June 1, 1943 at Chatani Batabari village in Kokrajhar district, Brahma served as the head teacher at Banargaon High School before retiring in 2001.

Brahma was the president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha from 2001 to 2007, vice-president of Bodo Writers Academy from 1986 to 1988 and adviser from 1996 to 1999. He was also the chief editor of Gwdan Gyan, a monthly general knowledge magazine in Bodo and Somni Agaan, a monthly Bodo poetry magazine, both of which have now stopped publication.
