Guwahati, April 28: Eleven persons were injured when a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in Devi Pukhuri Paanchali of Tinsukia district today.
The explosion occurred in a garbage bin in front of a shop owned by one Upendra Yadav around 7.40pm.
"Of the injured, three are critical while six had minor injuries. All the injured were rushed to Tinsukia civil hospital," a local resident said. One of them was shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.
"All of them are out of danger," director-general of police Mukesh Sahay said.
Police searched for other explosives but none were found.
Tinsukia deputy commissioner Puru Gupta and superintendent of police Mugdhajyoti Mahanta rushed to the spot.
"The blast was caused by a low-intensity time device. The injured are being treated. A police cordon has been deployed at the blast site. Army and bomb disposal squad have been called in," Mahanta said.
Sahay said police suspect that Ulfa (Independent) was behind the blast and it could have been retaliation to the killing of one of the outfit's key cadres - Rongmon Gogoi - at Bordumsa on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border yesterday.
