Ranchi: Ranchi University (RU) has been assigned a frequency for its community radio station, Kanchi, fuelling hope that the service can go on the air by early next year.
In a letter dated November 22, which the university received by fax on Friday, the department of telecommunications, under the ministry of communications and information technology, said that Kanchi had been allotted 90.4mhz frequency and that the radio station could run 24x7.
"We are trying our best to speed up things so that the project becomes a reality. Personally, I am very interested in this project as it will provide a huge impetus for the overall development of this university," vice chancellor Ramesh Kumar Pandey told The Telegraph, adding that they should be able to go on the air by the end of the year or early 2018.
The state government has allocated Rs 40 lakh for the Kanchi station, the recording studio for which would be located at the basic sciences building of the university's Morabadi campus.
Once Kanchi goes live, it will be Jharkhand's second university radio station after Birsa Agriculture University, which runs Birsa Hariyali Radio.
On the various benefits of hosting Kanchi, vice chancellor Pandey said it could prove to be extremely beneficial for addressing students about various university programmes and activities like examination and lecture schedules.
"Students will have a platform to receive practical training in running a broadcast station which can prove beneficial for those pursuing similar careers in future," he said.
RU will now make a detailed presentation before a committee after which it will have to sign an MoU with the department of telecommunications. Only then will the radio station start, said an official.
