Dumka, June 30: Absence of any senior leader or bureaucrat at the home turf of martyr brothers Sidho, Kanhu, Chand and Vairav at Bhognadih under Barhet block of Sahebganj, made the Shahid Mela organised to commemorate Santhal Hul a dull affair.

Much to the disappointment of JMM members who have been observing this day for the last 30 years, adverse weather conditions prevented party chief Shibu Soren from reaching Dumka by helicopter. Soren reached Lakarjoria under Jama block at Dumka, but could not fly to Bhognadih.

Governor M.O.H. Farook, who was also supposed to visit Bhognadih today, postponed his trip.Top BJP leaders like Arjun Munda stayed away as well. Following the death of Congress MLA Gopal Nath Shahdeo, Jharkhand State Congress Committee cancelled the party’s programme for the day at Bhognadih and Dumka.

Till last year, the Shahid Mela attracted top leaders on the occasion of Hul celebrations. However, not everyone was unhappy about the leaders staying away.

“It is good that no VVIP came this time. They only give us false promises,” said Bitiya Hembrom, a descendant of the Murmu brothers.
