Dhanbad: A 19-year-old aspiring engineer hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room in Bhistipara area of Hirapur here apparently over financial constraints.
The body of Rahul Kumar, a native of Mihijam in Jamtara, was found around 8.30am on Thursday, but police suspect the youth committed suicide on Wednesday night. A handwritten note in Hindi found in one of his trouser pockets blamed penury and health problems for the choice he made, police said.
The private hostel, Pen Guest House, is part of Hotel Rimjhim in Bhistipara. Rahul had been staying there for a year to prepare for the 2019 engineering entrance, assistant sub-inspector Balram Rawat said after preliminary investigations.
"Though the boy had enrolled in a BSc course at RSP College in Jharia, he was primarily concentrating on the engineering exam. The hostel staff knocked on his door in the morning and found no response. The owner then called police. The door was broken open. He was hanging from a nylon rope," ASI Rawat said.
Police said Rahul's father, Sanjay Modi, is a farmer at Mihijam. The boy had also sustained head injuries seven years ago and had been suffering from acute headaches.
"The family could not provide medical care owing to penury. The boy was depressed. We don't see any foul play," Rawat said, adding an unnatural death case would be lodged.
