Jamshedpur, July 27: The JMM has set the tone of Jamshedpur bypoll. It has decided to field Suman Mahato, the widow of slain JMM MP Sunil Mahto, as its candidate.

Shailendra Mahato, the two-time MP from Jamshedpur, is apparently the frontrunner in the BJP to get the party ticket. But sources said a decision on the candidate would be taken by the BJP state election committee in Ranchi on July 31. The proposed name would be sent to the central parliamentary committee, which would meet in New Delhi on August 1, for the final approval.

Though the BJP seems to be zeroing on Shailendra Mahato, former MP and Shailendra Mahto’s wife, Abha Mahto, Dinesh Sarangi and Dineshanand Goswami are also said to be in the race for the party ticket.

However, the JMM seems to be ahead as far as selection of candidate is concerned. It had already declared that Suman, the widow Sunil Mahto, would contest the bypoll in the party’s ticket. The JMM’s central committee “formally” put its seal on her name in a meeting in Delhi last night. She is expected to file her nomination on August 9. The BJP termed Suman’s candidature “very obvious” but the party’s Jamshedpur president Binod Singh claimed it would not affect the BJP’s chances of winning.
