Sex racket busted, 7 sent to jail
Ranchi: Seven youths, including two women, were forwarded to Birsa Munda Central Jail on Friday for their involvement in a sex racket that was being operated through WhatsApp.
The seven accused were arrested after a raid at Avatar Hotel on Station Road under Chutia police station area in the heart of the city on Thursday.
Police have seized contraceptives and condoms, 18 mobile phones, four two-wheelers and a car.
The men have been identified as Manoj Kumar Rai alias Mohit Singh (27), Praveen Rai (32), Manish Kumar (28) Rupesh Singh alias Anish Singh (25), and Mohammed Sajid (25).
While the men are residents of different parts of the city, the two women hail from Bengal.
At a news meet on Friday afternoon at Chutia police station, deputy SP (city) Raj Kumar Mehta said the group used to interact with customers on WhatsApp. "Customers were shown pictures of the women on WhatsApp. Those who showed interest, were taken to hotel rooms only after full advance payment. The rate ranged between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3000. The business has been going on for the last two years," Mehta said, adding that the accused have been booked under various sections of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.
Shedding more light on the breakthrough, Chutia OC Anil Kumar Karn said a policeman in plain clothes had gone to the hotel posing as a customer following a tip-off.
"Manish Kumar and Mohammed Sajid were customers while the other three used to work as brokers," Karn added.
