Rs 26 lakh in IPL bets seized, man held
Jamshedpur: Police claim to have busted an IPL betting racket after the arrest of one Parvez Ahmed from his Mango residence late on Tuesday night.
Police, who were tipped off about the betting racket being run at Ahmed's home at Sundervan, Phase 2, formed a team headed by SP (city) Prabhat Kumar.
The team raided the house and recovered Rs 26.43 lakh in cash and gold ornaments from Ahmed.
SSP Anoop Birtharay said that Ahmed was caught red-handed while accepting bets on the IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals that was being played at Eden Gardens in Calcutta on Tuesday night.
"We recovered cash, ornaments, seven mobile phones and a laptop from the house of the accused," he told the media, but refused to share details of how the racket may have been running.
"We hope to find further leads in the IPL betting racket being operated in other parts of the steel city," Birtharay said, adding that a case had been lodged against Ahmed under various sections of IPC and Lottery Act with the Mango police.
Sources in the police said Ahmed was the kingpin of IPL betting racket in the steel city. He tried to flee from his residence on seeing the police raid party. However, he was overpowered and nabbed by policemen and later brought to Mango thana for interrogation.
Police are also trying to find out details of his acquaintances who are also involved in the racket. "Ahmed is the kingpin and we will go deep into the IPL betting racket and find out who else are involved," a police official said.
