Rs 10 crore facelift hope for Birsa bus stand

After a decade of being synonymous with muck, filth and passenger woes, Birsa Munda Interstate Bus Terminus in Ranchi is now on revamp mode.
Located near the capital’s gateway Kantatoli Chowk, at Khadgarha, the bus terminus is set for a makeover worth Rs 10 crore, with funds earmarked under the 13th Finance Commission.
“A blueprint-cum-detailed project report has been prepared by Ranchi Municipal Corporation with the help of renowned architects-Chadda & Associates. According to it, the bus terminus spread over 18 acres will boast an administrative building, shops, restaurant, parking facilities for hundreds of buses, cafeteria, waiting halls etc,” the civic body’s executive officer Sunil Kumar told The Telegraph.
The municipal corporation’s executive engineer S. Raman added that a tender for the construction work was expected to be floated by the end of this week.
Sources said a grant worth Rs 10 crore under the 13th Finance Commission was allocated to the corporation a couple of months ago to revamp Kantatoli bus stand as well as another one at ITI.
However, given the fact that the Khadgarha facility would require Rs 10 crore alone for its revamp, the authorities decided to tackle it first.
Birsa Munda bus stand happens to be main interstate bus terminus in Jharkhand where from buses bound for Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar, Calcutta, Durgapur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Chaibasa, Patna, Gaya, Muzzaffarpur, among others, originate and arrive from.
The ITI bus stand is mainly used by vehicles plying between the capital, Palamau, Gumla, Lohardaga and some other districts.
Notably, the revamp of Khadgarha bus stand has hung fire for the last 10 years. The project was earlier the responsibility of Ranchi Regional Development Authority (RRDA), whose officials did precious little to ensure that the project saw the light of day.
For passengers, negotiating the filth and garbage to reach their respective buses is stuff nightmares are made of. Slush and encroachments by shanty dwellers have only made the 18-acre sprawl more inaccessible.
If commuters find the terminus trying, similar is the case with drivers using the facility regularly. Said driver of a Jamshedpur bound bus Md Parwez: “It stinks everywhere and it’s difficult to spend even an hour here that we have to in between journeys to and from the steel city.”
The foundation stone for revamp of Khadgarha was laid by then chief minister Babulal Marandi back in 2001-02, but the work did not start. Efforts were again made in 2005-06 during the tenure of former urban development minister Rabhubar Das, but that plan also did not take shape.
