Ranchi records coldest day

Jamshedpur: Capital Ranchi shivered to the bone and stayed indoors on Thursday as the North Wind gained speed and dragged the Celsius below normal to give the city its coldest day of the season so far.

The IMD observatory in Ranchi read 5.6°C, four degrees below normal.

Met officials said north-westerly wind blowing at 10kmph resulted in plummeting minimum temperatures and the weather was unlikely to change in the next 48 hours.

The cold wave was not limited to Ranchi. Palamau headquarters Daltonganj felt numb at 4.9°C, five notches below normal, while the minimum in steel city Bokaro nosedived to 5.5°C, six below normal.

For the second consecutive day Jamshedpur recorded 7.2°C, more than four degrees below normal. In Hazaribagh, Koderma and other places in western and central Jharkhand, the temperature stayed below 6°C.

Ranchi Met office hinted at a change in wind pattern around January 23. "The pattern will change to south-westerly owing to the impact of a Western Disturbance," said S.C. Mandal, a senior Met official.
