Railway meet on passenger welfare
Jamshedpur: Infrastructure development, introduction and extension of trains and issues concerning passenger amenities at various stations under Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway (SER) came up for discussion at a meeting of the 15-member Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) held at the railway headquarters in Chakradharpur on Friday.
Chakradharpur divisional railway manager Chatrasal Singh, who is also the chairman of the committee, presided over the meeting that began at 11am and continued for over two hours. Several senior officials of the division, including senior divisional commercial manager Bhaskar, were present.
Rajesh Garg, a DRUCC member and general secretary of Rourkela Chamber of Commerce and Industry, demanded resumption of services of Rourkela-Koraput Express that had been suspended in August 2017. He also appealed for the extension of the Ranchi-New Delhi Garib Rath Express till Rourkela.
Some DRUCC members demanded more AC coaches in the Howrah-Mumbai Geetanjali Express. The train, which travels via Tatanagar, has four AC coaches - two AC two-tier and two AC three-tier. Introduction of a sleeper coach and a third-AC coach in the Howrah-Titlagarh Ispat Superfast Express was also demanded by a few members.
A member pointed out that although two escalators and two elevators were ready at Rourkela station, they were yet to be made operational causing inconvenience to passengers, especially the elderly and disabled.
Some members demanded that vehicles parked outside Tatanagar station be streamlined and sufficient parking space be provided outside other stations of the division.
Increasing the number of dustbins and imposing a blanket ban on plastics were some of the issues that came up for discussion.
The members felt the need to improve infrastructure and passenger amenities at Panposh station in West Singhbhum district and make Rajganjpur station a halt for trains such as Pune-Howrah Azad Hind Express, Hatia-Yeshwantpur Express and Howrah-Kurla Super Deluxe Jnaneshwari Express.
Sanjeet Kumar Mishra, a representative of Chhotanagpur Passenger Association, demanded early execution of the much-awaited Ranchi-Tata (Namkum-Kandra) rail link and introduction of a new Jan Shatabdi Express between Tatanagar and Patna and another super-fast train between Tatanagar and Buxar in Bihar.
