Jamshedpur: The 25-year-old woman whose body was recovered from Kharkai river under Kadma thana on Wednesday evening is suspected to have been murdered, with the needle of suspicion pointing towards her husband.
Police, who had registered a case of unnatural death after the recovery of Laxmi Kumhakar's body, filed a murder case on Thursday on the basis of an FIR lodged by victim's father Madhu Kumhakar.
"We are registering a murder case on the basis of the FIR and preliminary findings," Kadma thana OC J.K. Thakur told The Telegraph.
He said some construction workers had seen the victim falling from the train while it was crossing the Adityapur rail bridge. "According to the eye-witnesses, the woman was holding on to a concrete slab jutting out of the bridge before falling into the water. Why would anyone committing suicide, try to save herself?" the OC said, adding that her husband Subodh was absconding.
A resident of Adardih village in Chandil, Laxmi had boarded Purulia-Jhargram Passenger at 10.15am on Tuesday with Subodh and his nephew. They were supposed to get down at Tatanagar by 11.45am. However, at 12.45pm, Subodh called up his father-in-law to inform that Laxmi went missing from the train after it crossed Adityapur.
Madhu rushed to Jamshedpur to search for his daughter at Tatanagar and Adityapur and came to know that a woman had jumped from a passenger train that day.
The victim's father stayed at Adityapur on Tuesday night and resumed his search along the Kharkai river the next day. Around 5 in the evening, he stumbled upon a group of people gathered around a body at Shastrinagar in Kadma.
"I found my daughter lying there and informed the police," the bereaved father said.
Madhu said his daughter got married to Subodh, a resident of Burkhadih village in Potka block, three months ago.
"About a fortnight ago, Subodh had mercilessly beaten up my daughter for refusing to visit a tourist place along with him and his three friends," he said. After the incident, Laxmi came back to her father's place. On Tuesday, Subodh was taking her back to her in-laws.
"How could my daughter jump from the train while her husband was travelling with him? Why didn't he stop her?" Madhu wondered.
He alleged that Subodh had pushed Laxmi out of the train. He said his son-in-law was also not satisfied with the dowry they had given him.
