Mango bares civic gaps

Jamshedpur: Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) may have stepped on the gas to keep its roads clean ahead of Swachh Survekshan, yet residents claim that many areas are still left untouched.

MNAC special officer Rajendra Prasad Gupta said the local civic body had pressed into service 174 cleaning staff to keep the areas under its command clean ahead of the pan-India sanitation survey likely to take place later this month.

"Earlier, we had 124 cleaning staff. But in view of the survey, we have hired an additional 50 hands. We are getting three major roads cleaned up twice a day and the lanes once in every three days," Gupta told The Telegraph on Friday.

Punching a hole in the claim, residents of Jakirnagar, Azadnagar, Sankosai and Ulidih in Mango complained of garbage lying piled up for days in lanes.

"The civic body is focused on keeping mainly three prominent roads clean. Garbage in our lanes hardly gets picked up by the cleaning staff," Kamal Kishor Prasad, a resident of Road No. 8 in Jawaharnagar and who runs a mobile shop in Mango, said.

An MNAC source said the civic body had planned to get three major roads - Mango-Pardih Road, Dimna Road and Old Purulia Road - cleaned twice a day.

"However, these roads are cleaned once daily and that too by a fewer number of staff," the source said.

The special officer said MNAC had only two hydraulic dumper placers that were finding it difficult to dispose of the waste from around 200 garbage bins across Mango.

"We need two more dumper placers. In the absence of adequate number of placers, half of the garbage-filled buckets are lying uncollected for dumping at the yard in Babudih along the Subernarekha river," Gupta said.

He said the civic body had requisitioned for two more placers, but didn't know whether it would be approved.

MNAC command area is spread from Pardih to Baliguma and comprises 10 wards with a population over 3 lakh.
