Ranchi, June 28: Governor M.O.H. Farook will inaugurate IIM, Ranchi, on July 6, bringing Jharkhand the distinction of opening the first new management cradle among the four planned by the Union government.

The three other proposed IIMs are coming up at Rohtak, Tiruchirapalli and Udaypur. While facilities in Rohtak will be inaugurated after July 6, the other two will start offering courses only next year, said Dinesh Varma, the chief administrative officer of IIM, Calcutta, the mentor institute.

Ranchi will boast the eighth IIM in the country after Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Shillong.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled at 5.45pm on July 6, followed by commencement of classes from July 7 morning. Chairman of board of governors of IIM, Ranchi, R.C. Bhargava and IIM, Calcutta, director Shekhar Choudhury will grace the occasion along with a host of officials from the ministry of human resource development.

At a news meet here today, Varma said while the ground and fifth floor of Suchana Bhavan would be the temporary address for IIM, Ranchi, hostel facilities would be provided at Sri Krishna Sinha Institute of Public Administration.

To begin with, Ranchi will have only 56 students this year. “Only the cream among those who have cracked CAT 2009 have got admission. The minimum cut off was 96 per cent,” Varma said, adding that faculty members from Calcutta would take classes for now.

Notably, a director for IIM, Ranchi, is yet to be appointed by the Union ministry. Advertisement for the coveted post was published in national and regional dailies a couple of months ago. Advertisements for senior faculty positions have also been published.
