Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum rural SP Prabhat Kumar, who had planned and successfully executed the arrest of fugitive gangster Akhilesh Singh on October 11, on Sunday recounted the Gurgaon encounter.
Kumar had flown to Delhi, acting on specific information, October 10 evening and within hours - precisely by 2.30am the next day - Akhilesh (39), an accused in over 50 criminal cases including murder and extortion, was in police custody.
"I was the only cop from Jharkhand who took part in the operation along with Haryana police. A team of five policemen (from Jharkhand) was arriving by train because the initial plan was to raid on October 12. But, the situation was so demanding that I could not wait. Along with Haryana police, we decided to swoop on the gangster," Kumar told this newspaper.
The rural SP stressed that had they delayed the operation by a few hours, Akhilesh might have made good his escape. "Akhilesh and his wife were holed up in the ground floor of the three-storey guesthouse in DLF Colony. There were 15 Haryana cops, besides me. A team of 10 surrounded the guesthouse while five of us entered the guesthouse. Akhilesh opened the door, a 7.62mm pistol in hand," Kumar recalled.
The gangster began running at the sight of cops and also opened fire. "His wife tried to stop the cops. However, a jawan of Haryana police managed to fire two shots, which hit the fleeing gangster's legs. And, Akhilesh was caught," the SP said, adding that his wife Garima (30), against whom a cheating case is pending in Gurgaon, was also arrested. "She had tried to prevent police from carrying out their duty too."
Akhilesh was admitted to Gurgaon civil hospital the same day and was sent to Bhondsi district jail on a 14-day remand on Friday. Garima is also lodged in the same jail.
A source in police said it might take at least a month to secure Akhilesh's transit remand.
