Hotwar hunts for mentors

HIRING NOW: The mega sports complex in Ranchi

Ranchi: Ahead of its third session commencing in April, the Jharkhand State Sports Promotion Society (JSSPS) has initiated steps to recruit coaches, assistant coaches and a host of other resource persons to make the academies at Jaipal Singh Munda Mega Sports Complex in Hotwar more functional.

A joint venture between the state government and Central Coalfields (CCL), the Society was formed to mould and maintain 15 games cradles and an umbrella sports varsity. Currently, 178 cadets in the 7-10 age group are being conditioned in various sports disciplines while 222 more, selected through a year-long talent hunt, will be inducted next month.

Now, the Society intends to ready a pool of coaches and resource persons to facilitate allotment of academies to these cadets. It has already notified vacancies for 10 posts for coach and 14 for assistant coach in cycling, synchronised diving, swimming, badminton, weightlifting, table tennis, judo, boxing, hockey and shooting.

Three lifeguards, a ground curator, a public relations officer and wardens are among the host of non-sports functionaries who will also be hired.

Vikrant Malhan, a senior administrative officer of the Society, said currently, they had four coaches and five assistant coaches on board for wrestling, archery, taekwondo and athletics while football mentoring had been outsourced to a Calcutta-based agency.

"New coaches mean we are also heading towards setting up game-specific academies for which hiring is open now," Malhan told this newspaper.

Interested candidates can send in their forms by March 20. Eligibility criteria for coaches and assistant coaches vary from game to game details of which have been uploaded on the website http://jharkhandcclsports.in.

Broadly speaking, coaches need to have a degree in sports mentoring, two years of international exposure and medals at international events, among other things. Assistant coaches, on the other hand, need a diploma in sports mentoring, two years of experience and medals at national level.

"Before the fresh batch joins, we plan to hire our coaches and assistant coaches. This will grant cadets correct conditioning, which is a three-month process that will allow us to gauge the competence of the new mentors as well," Malhan summed up.
