Ranchi/Jamshedpur: Jharkhand was named the best performing state in Swachh Survekshan 2018, ahead of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, possibly surprising itself and the rest of the nation, as minister for housing and urban affairs Hardeep Singh Puri announced winners of the survey in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The state earned more swachh laurels, as capital Ranchi became the best state capital and Giridih best city in the one-three lakh population range in terms of citizen feedback on their daily experiences. Bundu, part of Ranchi district along NH-33, became east zone's cleanest city among those with a population below a lakh. Pakur became east zone's best city for innovation and best practices among those with a population of more than a lakh. In the same population category, Chaibasa topped east zone in solid waste management.

In all, 4,203 urban local bodies from across India took part in the 4,000-point survekshan, including 1,400 for service level events and initiatives, 1,400 for citizen feedback and 1,200 for direct observation.

Hailing the results as the outcome of the state's hard work in implementing the Centre's Swachh Bharat Mission, state urban development minister C.P. Singh promised to make Jharkhand open defecation free on October 2, 2019, Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.

Rajesh Kumar Sharma, director of State Urban Development Agency (Suda), an arm of state urban development, praised "concerted effort" of local urban bodies. "Ranks of cities such as Jamshedpur, Chas and Dhanbad will show an improvement when the entire ranking is announced," he said, thanking citizens for their massive support, especially in Ranchi and Giridih.

Chaibasa nagar parishad executive officer Kumar Narendra Narayan also praised residents for "purchasing blue and green bags and segregating wastes on their own".

Overall, Indore was adjudged the cleanest city, followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh. Names of worst performing cities would be named later.
