Ranchi: Chief minister Raghubar Das on Thursday announced that the state government would provide training and logistics support to women self-help groups (SHGs) or sakhi mandals to help them manufacture sanitary napkins, which would be directly purchased by the health department for distribution among girl students in government schools.

Das was addressing a gathering of around 25,000 women from sakhi mandals on the occasion of International Women's Day at JNU Stadium in HEC. He also distributed assets worth Rs 1,100 crore among 70,000 sakhi mandals.

The chief minister said the government had decided to involve SHGs to manage the ready-to-eat food project worth Rs 400 crore annually to supply cooked meal at government-run Anganwadi centres.

"Financial independence is important for women empowerment. The government has also decided to give sakhi mandals, involved in the production of eggs, a bank loan of Rs 4 lakh to run their business. Government schools will purchase their products," Das said, adding ponds will be leased out for a notional payment of Re 1 to SHGs interested in fishery.

"Earlier, the government had changed land property registration rule wherein female buyers will have to pay only Re 1 as stamp duty. My government wants to see you (women) as owners," he said.

The CM applauded the women of Jharkhand who wholeheartedly supported the toilet construction drive and Clean India campaign, which found mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann ki Baat. He announced that the government would distribute 2.5 lakh honey bee boxes among women entrepreneurs.

State rural development minister Neelkanth Singh Munda, who was present at the programme, said the government planned to form 2 lakh Sakhi Mandals across 24 districts.

In keeping with the Women's Day theme, the CM's security and the area around the dais were managed by Shakti commando of Ranchi police.

"Six female officials and 36 Shakti commando constables were deployed for the security of the chief minister," a senior official of Ranchi police said.
