The 12-year-old Hatia DSP murder case, which was closed on April 19 because no witness turned up before a trial court, received a fresh lease of life on Monday.

Public prosecutor B.N. Sharma said two constables — Suresh Rajak and Narendra Dhar Dubey — showed up in court to record their statements.

“After the court closed the file on April 19, I wrote an urgent letter to the SSP,” Sharma said, adding that several other policemen were expected to testify in court.

DSP U.C. Jha was attacked and fatally injured by a mob in Doranda on December 28, 2000. The protest had been spurred by the death of a girl in a road accident on Id.

A murder case was registered at Doranda police station the same day. There were 35 witnesses, including 15 policemen and a magistrate. But no one had turned up in court until now.

Sharma said the matter would be taken up in the court of judicial commissioner Manoj Prasad on Tuesday.
