Jamshedpur, June 18: After bidding adieu to Tata Football Academy (TFA) in March, Subodh Kumar is back to the city with a purpose.

Lack of adequate infrastructure elsewhere in the state has forced Subodh, an ex-Tata Football Academy (TFA) cadet, to drop anchor here and adequately prepare for a stint with renowned Calcutta club East Bengal.

East Bengal has signed up Subodh, a native of Hundud village near Ranchi, for Rs 32 lakh. He is all set to begun his innings with the club next month.

“I've been in my village after passing out from TFA in March this year. I was keen to keep myself in fine fettle, as I want to come up with a good performance during my stint at East Bengal. But there was no proper place to practice,” he said.

The promising striker, who hails from a modest family and used to sell peanuts before making it to the TFA in 2006, added that he had opted for Ranchi to practice, but the facilities were very poor. “Grounds in Ranchi were not in good shape. The National Games are due in December, but I have reservations about the infrastructure,” Subodh pointed out.

He said he couldn't have gone elsewhere for practice, as he was well aware of the facilities. “I am thankful to TFA authorities for allowing me to use their facilities here. Unlike other cities in Jharkhand, the ambience at TFA is superb. I am picking up well and am confident about putting my best foot forward while turning out for East Bengal,” Subodh, who has captained both TFA and Jharkhand, said confidently.

The hard working footballer, who aims to build a house with his first instalment from East Bengal, is keeping himself busy at TFA.

“I practice with the boys in the morning and evening sessions. I also spend time at the gym. I am getting the required support from experienced coaches of the academy. It couldn’t have been better,” Subodh, who will be joining East bengal on July 15 said.

Besides charging himself up for East Bengal, Subodh is also preparing for the upcoming 16th Asian Games, which is scheduled in Guangzhou, China from November 12 - 27.

Subodh, along with some of his ex-TFA mates Jagtar Singh, Jagrup Singh, O Milan Singh, Raju Gaekwad and Abhishek Das is one of the probables for the mega event. TFA goalie Ravi Kumar is also on the list of probables.

The camp for Asian Games will be held either at Goa or Delhi. “Though the dates are yet to be announced, I have to be well prepared for the grind ahead. For that fitness is prime and TFA is the best place to sweat out,” he added.
