Daltonganj (Palamau): State director-general of police D.K. Pandey has said the CID has shortlisted 10 of Jharkhand's 24 districts with focus on two police stations of each with highest crime rates to curb the incidents.
Speaking to this paper on Wednesday, Pandey said that the CID in its review meeting on Tuesday evening identified the 10 districts and the two thanas in each.
The 10 shortlisted districts in focus are Ranchi, East Singhbhum (Jamshedpur), Palamau, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Giridih, Dhanbad, Chatra and Deoghar, the DGP said.
The two police stations in each of these 10 districts that are highly vulnerable to crime are Kotwali and Sukhdeonagar thanas in Ranchi; Ramgarh Town and Kuju in Ramgarh; Dhanbad Town and Bank More in Dhanbad; Sadar and Muffasil in Hazaribagh; Sakchi and Bistupur in Jamshedpur (East Singhbhum); Deoghar Town and Jasidih in Deoghar; Chatra Town and Peeparwar in Chatra; Chas and Sector IV in Bokaro; Giridih Town and Muffasil in Giridih; and Daltonganj and Chainpur in Palamau.
The DGP said the maximum report of crimes come from these police stations, an upswing that must be contained and curbed.
Offences against women and children must be curbed with a very firm hand, the DGP said. Cyber crimes and IT-related cases needed efficient handling, he stressed. The DGP added crimes over property and land were also their focus.
On curbing crimes, he asked for the formation of mohalla samitis, installation of CCTV cameras, vigil in beats by cops, among others. Highway police patrol must be beefed up too, he said.
"Supervisory police officers such as inspectors and deputy superintendents of police must take extra pains to prevent crimes and if they are committed, must bust them within the shortest possible time so earn the confidence of people. Speedy trial of the charge-sheeted accused is a must," he said, adding that senior cops should now spend nights in these police stations where the crime rate is high.
Giving a tip to prevent crimes, the DGP said hotspots in vulnerable police stations had to be identified with incidences of crimes in the past as this would establish a pattern of crime under those thanas.
On Palamau, which is known for rebel activities, the DGP said he had asked the SP to take utmost care of two police stations, Daltonganj and Chainpur, that are prone to crimes. "I have asked the SP to place able-bodied officers here who have zeal and knack to crack cases with meticulous investigation," he said.
A police officer in Palamau who did not want to be named said district law enforcers were so deeply obsessed with Naxalism here that they did not see anything beyond it. "Criminals took advantage of this and began to call shots, some even from inside the jail here," he said, admitting both rural and urban crimes had increased in the district.
