Cops on Deoghar duty worry steel city
Jamshedpur: Several traffic posts of the steel city are likely to remain unmanned since at least half of Jamshedpur's traffic policemen have been sent on deputation to Deoghar for the month-long Shravani Mela.
"We have 62 traffic cops for the five traffic posts across the city. Of these, 35 have been deputed for Deogarh. Most of them have already left. A few others will be leaving by Sunday. They will be returning only on September 1," said a traffic police officer at Bistupur, adding that regular cops could not be assigned traffic duty as that would mean compromising day-to-day security measures to maintain law and order.
Policemen from the five traffic posts of the steel city-Sakchi, Bistupur, Mango, Golmuri and Jugsalai-are deputed at major roads to regulate traffic during peak hours, during traffic diversions for road widening work and also for conducting various checks like for car papers and helmets.
On Saturday, policemen weren't present at several important stretches at Bistupur, Sakchi and Golmuri crossings, and on Jugsalai-Tatanagar Station Road where a large number of policemen are usually present to regulate traffic.
Jamshedpur city SP Prabhat Kumar admitted there was a crisis in the traffic police workforce.
"We have got orders from the state police headquarters for deputing policemen for law and order duty at Shravani Mela. This will surely lead to a crisis in the city. However, we are confident of tackling the situation with available resources and ensure there is no major law and order problem in the city," he said.
Shravani Mela is scheduled to begin on July 28 and continue till August 26 in Deogarh district. Thousands of devotees are expected to visit the Basukinath Temple for which the state government would be deputing additional police forces from all districts.
Jamshedpur DSP traffic Vivekanand Thakur did not believe deputation of traffic cops to Deoghar woould matter much.
"Traffic policing will be affected due to deputation of policemen. However, this is done every year and we will try to manage with the available workforce to the best of our ability. It is not a big issue," he said.
Sources at Golmuri police lines said as many as 400 policemen were being deputed for Shravani Mela from the district which would make it difficult for city police too.
