Ranchi, Oct. 13: Police today arrested three persons from two different areas of Simdega district for the murder of BJP leader Manoj Nageshia on October 6. Both guns and motorcycles used in the attack have been seized.

While Sheetal Kandulana (23) and Loren Samad (23) were picked up from Kolebira, Anup was arrested from nearby Jaldega. Police also recovered nine mobile phones and five PLFI posters from them.

Manoj Nageshia (45), who had unsuccessfully contested the Kolebira Assembly seat on a BJP ticket in 2014, was shot at point blank range around 10.45pm outside his friend's house in Lachragarh village where he had gone for dinner after attending a tribal harvest festival and a fair. The place is located 20km from Kolebira police station, 50km from Simdega district headquarters and around 120km from Ranchi.

During interrogations, the accused told police that Nageshia was killed at the behest of PLFI area commander Vijay Dang, alias Vijay Tiger, who carries a Rs 2 lakh reward on his head. They claimed that Dang had given them a pistol and a country-made gun to kill Nageshia and promised Rs 50,000 each as reward.

A former CPI (Maoist) rebel, Nageshia was actively involved in persuading rebels to shun violence and return to mainstream. He used to be one of the main speakers at most of the police - public meetings organised by Simdega district administration from time to time urging absconder rebels to surrender.

On October 7, PLFI area commander Vijay Dang called up local newspapers and claimed that Nageshia was killed by the outfit for being a police informer. He also alleged that the ex-rebel had threatened to kill a PLFI area commander in six months.

The killing had sent shockwaves across the state. Chief minister Raghubar Das ordered DGP D.K. Pandey to ensure that the culprits were brought to book at the earliest.

"The plan to kill Nageshia was finalised by Dang. The rebel and the trio reached Lachragarh on two motorcycles. The decision to eliminate Nageshia at his friend's place was taken because the surrounding area was dark. There was a plan B, too. If Nageshia hadn't turned up for dinner, then he would have been killed near the stage. Anup first shot Nageshia with a 9mm pistol which misfired. He then snatched the country-made gun from Loren and killed the BJP leader," Simdega SP Rajeev Ranjan Singh said.
