Dhanbad: Two members of a Sahebganj-based gang were arrested from their native villages on Wednesday in connection with the daring break-in at the treasury branch of State Bank of India in Bokaro, more than 300km away, during Christmas holidays last year.

Police have recovered two neck ornaments that are just a fraction of the valuables cleaned out from the 70-plus lockers between December 23 and 25. While one gold chain is worth Rs 8,700, the valuation of the other jewellery, a choker, is being carried out.

Bokaro SP Karthik S. said the duo had been identified as Jitu Ghosh (25) and Salim Sheikh (29), both residents of Rajmahal thana area of Sahebganj district and members of the Hassan Chikna gang.

"A Special Investigation Team, led by city DSP Ajay Kumar, zeroed in on the gang while browsing profiles of history-sheeters. The gang was involved in a big break-in two years ago. It has 15 active members, including those arrested," the SP said.

The gang, Karthik added, was suspected to be also involved in a jewellery store theft in Kerala. "We are probing the links. Others members will be nabbed soon."
