Baby girl found dead on riverbank
Ranchi: The body of a month-old girl was found near the cremation ground on the banks of Subernarekha in Namkum, 7km from the capital, on Wednesday morning.
Although a strangulation-like mark was seen around her neck, police have ruled out murder for now.
The caretaker of the cremation ground, Mahesh Ram, spotted the body around 8.45am and dialled 100. A police control room van took the dead baby into custody soon thereafter. ASI Ishwar Dayal said the body was sent to RIMS for post-mortem.
Residents suspect the baby was strangled to death. "I saw a black thread around her neck. It looked like a shoe lace," said one of them. Constable Subhas who was in PCR van said he saw the thread too, but wasn't sure if it was a shoe lace or something else.
Namkum thana OC Pankaj Bhushan said the baby girl was wearing a "sacred" black thread. "It is tied around the neck to ward off evil. We believe the baby died a natural death. However, the autopsy will clear air further," he added.
In Dhanbad, a 19-year-old daughter of block-level BJP worker Amarjit Kumar was found hanging from the ceiling of her house on Luby Circular Road on Wednesday.
The family suspects the girl killed herself after failing her BCom exam.
