3 get RI for 'witch' murder

Ranchi: A local court on Wednesday awarded rigorous life imprisonment to a dreaded criminal and his two aides for killing a 45-year-old woman on the suspicion of being a witch in Chanho police station area of Ranchi district on July 24, 2009.

The court of S.S. Prasad found Ropna Oraon, Mahaveer Oraon and Sunil Oraon guilty of branding Bati Oraon a witch and murdering her. A penalty of Rs 13,000 each was also slapped on the trio. If they fail to paythe fine, the convicts will have to serve an additional four-and-a-half months of simple imprisonment.

However, the court released another two accused- Jhopra Oraon and Fahua Oraon - in the absence of evidence.

The incident took place at Sinduwar Toli, about 40km from the district headquarters, when the convicts barged inside the house of farmer Lotenga Oraon, dragged out his wife and murdered her on the suspicion of practising witchcraft.

Police had lodged an FIR under Sections 302 (murder), 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code, and Sections 3,4,5 of Prevention of Witchcraft Act.

Additional public prosecutor S. Ansari said the prosecution produced seven witnesses during the trial.
