Bhagalpur, Aug. 2: Battle lines were drawn in Bhagalpur today, as candidates filed nominations for the Assembly bypoll on August 21.

The NDA (comprising BJP, LJP and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party) has fielded 60-year-old Nabhay Choudhary. The BJP’s Bhagalpur district president, Choudhary has the support of spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain and Buxar MP Ashwini Kumar Choubey.

He filed his nomination before the sub-divisional officer (also returning officer) Sunil Kumar.

Choubey, who was also present, said: “The people of Bhagalpur have supported me since 1995 (he held the seat till shifting to Buxar for the Lok Sabha elections this year) and I hope this time, they would support Choudhary too.”

The 60-year-old had been close to Choubey since the time he was an MLA. This year, he became Shahnawaz’s poll agent in Bhagalpur gaining his support as well.

A source said: “During the recently concluded Lok Sabha poll, the relationship between Choubey and Shahnawaz soured. But Choudhary remained on good terms with both.”

The MP, however, claimed that the state leadership had ignored workers’ views in the distribution of tickets for the Parbatta, Narkatiaganj and Jale seats.

About to give the BJP’s Choudhary a fight is the JDU-RJD-Congress alliance candidate, 58-year-old Ajit Sharma.

Sharma came with Bulo Mandal, the RJD’s Bhagalpur MP, to file the papers. He said: “Bhagalpur has always been neglected and the former MLA (Choubey) who did not do any positive work. He was a minister but didn’t do anything and started abusing the government after the BJP’s split with the JDU.” He claimed that the people would support him to develop the town.

Apart from the warhorses, Mukesh Kumar Das of the CPI-ML (Liberation), Samajwadi Party’s Khurshid Alam and Independents Kamlesh Kumar and Uchashwar Pandit filed their nominations.
