Five drown in boat mishap

Araria, June 15: Five persons drowned when a boat capsized in river Parman near Rampur-Mohanpur, around 15km from the district headquarters, last evening.

The deceased have been identified as Patubari village resident Manglu, Phulbasti Kadawa village resident Mohammed Alam (55), Mahisakol village resident Afsana (8), Mohanpur village resident Ganesh Baitha’s two-and-half-year old son and Chandani Devi, another resident of Mohanpur.

Another person was still missing at the time of filing this report. A joint rescue operation was launched by Sashtra Seema Bal (SSB) and state police soon after the news broke last evening. While four bodies were recovered last night, Chandani’s body was found this morning.

Her husband Ganesh Yadav is still missing. Sources said divers were used in the rescue operation. Sources added that around 60 people were on the boat. They were returning from Araria town, where they went for shopping.

Araria sub-divisional officer Binod Kumar and sub-divisional police officer Mohammed Kasim led the rescue operation.

Kasim told The Telegraph: “The cause of the mishap was overloading. With the help of divers, four out of five bodies were recovered last night and one body was recovered today. One person has still not been found. For the rescue operation, a big net was used.”

Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi expressed grief at the tragedy and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 1 lakh to bereaved families of each of the deceased. He said the state government would soon announce a policy for regulating boats ferrying passengers to stop boat mishaps.
