Bagaha: A 17-year-old girl studying in a government secondary school was allegedly gang-raped by 11 students, at least one of them from the same institution, in this West Champaran town, the second incident of mass rape in the state within a fortnight.

Police in Bagaha, 260km northwest of Patna, on Wednesday arrested a minor boy in connection with the gang-rape, which took place on July 10 but the formal complaint was lodged only a week later, on Tuesday (July 17). The other accused in the case are still at large.

In her complaint submitted to the Bagaha police station on Tuesday, the 17-year-old survivor, a student of Class X, alleged that she was forcibly taken to a farm field and gang- raped by the youths when she was returning home from her school during lunch break to take money for filling up forms for an examination.

Though she shouted for help, nobody came to her rescue since the place was desolate. She could recognise one of her tormentors and, in her complaint, disclosed his identity to the police. She said that she could not report the incident to the police immediately as the accused had threatened her with dire consequences. The rapists left the scene of crime only when she fainted.

The girl's ordeal came to the fore after she stopped going to school. On being pressed by her parents for an explanation, she narrated what had happened. Her parents formally reported the incident to the police on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the police took the named accused - a minor - into custody and produced him before the juvenile justice board. The boy, who passed his Class X board exam this year from the same school as the girl, was later sent to the remand home in Bettiah, the West Champaran district headquarters.

In her complaint, the girl has said there were 10 other boys - all friends of her school senior - who had raped her. She said that she didn't know their names, but would recognise them. When she was questioned by the police, she told them that the 10 other boys were also students belonging to various schools.

Superintendent of Bagaha police district Arvind Kumar Gupta said: "The incident is serious in nature. However, the truth will come out after the medical examination of the girl. The named accused has already been arrested."

The SP said a special investigation team headed by the Ram Nagar sub-divisional police officer has been formed to probe the incident. "Raids are underway to nab the other accused. Their identity is yet to be ascertained," he added.

An investigating officer said the arrested teenager had admitted to the police that he had established physical relationship with the girl with her consent.

This is the second incident of gang-rape of a schoolgirl in the past fortnight. Earlier this month, a Class X student of a private school in Saran had alleged that she was sexually assaulted by 18 persons, including the principal and two teachers of the institution.
