Gaya: A couple, Pancho Singh and his wife Chhaya Devi, residents of Kotwali police station area here, were awarded life imprisonment under different sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act and the Indian Penal Code.

The sentence was awarded by additional district and sessions judge Sachchidanand Singh.

The Pocso law was enacted in 2012 to protect children from sexual offences. Besides rigorous life imprisonment, the couple, found guilty of procuring children for flesh trade and other immoral purposes, was also levied a heavy fine. Whereas Pancho Singh was slapped with a fine of Rs 8 lakh, Chhaya Devi was slapped a fine of Rs 4 lakh.

The couple ran a brothel in Sarai locality of the town and pushed girls including minors into flesh trade.

A case was registered against the couple in Kotwali police station area of the town under Sections 4,6,12 of the Pocso Act, Sections 3,4,5,6,7 and 9 of the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act and Sections 370, 366A, 376/114 and Section 373 of the Indian Penal Code.

Welcoming the court order, activist Manoj Kumar, engaged in anti-human trafficking operations and rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking, hoped that the other cases under Pocso and ITPA would be fast-tracked to infuse the fear of law among child traffickers and others engaged in similar offences.

Manoj thanked the police and public prosecutor for taking the case to its logical end in less than three years.

The case was registered in 2015, recalled the activist who had been enthusiastically pursuing the case.
