Bettiah: Armed criminals robbed a medical studentof Rs 6,000 on Wednesday morning near Janta cinema.

Piyush Bhardwaj (25) of the Government Medical College and Hostel at Bettiah was on his way to the hostel from the bus stand when the criminals attacked him.

"Prima facie the motive looks to be loot," said Nityanand Chauhan, officer-in-charge of Town police station.

"No sooner did I reach Janata cinema around 5am that two motorcycle-borne criminals stopped the rickshaw in which I was travelling and started searching my pockets. I put up some resistance. But on sensing that one of them was trying to whip out a weapon, I escaped taking advantage of the thick fog and took shelter in a nearby house," he said, adding that the attackers chased him for some distance.

No arrests had been made till the time of filing the report. On January 30, Sheikh Mustafa, otherwise known as the Veerappan of Champaran, was gunned down by criminals at Ekwa Parsoni village in West Champaran. On January 23, two motorcycle-borne criminals robbed an advocate of Rs 2 lakh, followed by a loot of Rs 5.5 lakh from a businessman in Bettiah on January 25.
