Faf in doubt for Zimbabwe Test
Calcutta: South Africa captain Faf du Plessis is doubtful for historic Boxing Day Test against Zimbabwe in Port Elizabeth. The December 26-29 game will be the first official four-day Test match and also the first-ever pink-ball D/N Test in South Africa.
Du Plessis picked up a lower back injury during the third ODI against Bangladesh in October and has not played since then. Initially, it was expected that the skipper would recover in time for the Test against Zimbabwe, but he confirmed in an interview on Tuesday that he was still unsure about his participation in that game, said a South African sports website.
Should Du Plessis miss the match, former captain AB de Villiers turns out to be one option as far as leading the side is concerned. Also there alongside De Villiers is Dean Elgar, who led South Africa at Lord's earlier in the year .
If he is unable to play against Zimbabwe, Du Plessis will be looking to make a return for the Tests versus India, which gets underway in Cape Town from January 5 next year.
