Calcutta: Vision 2020 batting consultant VVS Laxman feels performance of junior players in the Bengal squad is the biggest gain from the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
Bengal take on Delhi in the semi-final in Pune which starts Sunday. “The youngsters showed great character and maturity. It’s a big plus for Bengal cricket,” Laxman said in Pune on Friday. He reached Pune on Thursday.
Youngsters like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Abhishek Raman, Writtick Chatterjee, B. Amit and Ishan Porel came of age in this Ranji season, making valuable contributions.
Laxman, however, refused to take credit for Bengal’s impressive performance so far. “ I just guided them. It’s the players who deserve the credit. They played on the field, I didn’t,” the former India middle-order batsman said.
Wriddhiman Saha and Mohammed Shami would be playing the match, and according to Laxman, that gives Bengal a big advantage. “When seniors like Saha and Shami play, then you get a head start. They have the big-match temperament and in crunch matches like these, you need senior pros,” he said.
Captain Manoj Tiwary said Laxman’s presence is a big morale booster. “VVS hasn’t spoken anything semi-final specific… Just normal talk about cricket... What he generally does throughout the year,” Manoj said.
Bengal coach Sairaj Bahutule also said Laxman’s presence is helpful. “Before a big match, small tips do come in handy.
Laxman has played innumerable big matches. He is someone who was known to thrive under pressure. So, when he says something, players will obviously be all ears to him,” Bahutule said.
